Fishermen Rescue Distressed Green Turtle at Port Dickson
SEREMBAN: Local fishermen helped rescue a female green turtle, estimated to be around 20 years old, after it was found in distress on the beach at Pantai Tanjung Gemok, Port Dickson. The turtle, weighing approximately 35kg, was released back into the sea on Sunday, January 30.
Discovery and Immediate Action
Hishamudin Abd Manap, manager of the Turtle Hatchery at Glory Beach Resort, recounted, “I was on the beach when fishermen informed me about the turtle, which appeared weak, likely from being on land too long.” He promptly contacted the Negri Sembilan Fisheries Department (JPNS), who advised releasing the turtle back into the sea around noon.
Understanding Turtle Behavior
JPNS fisheries officer Doreen Wee Siew Leen explained that turtles often come ashore to lay eggs, particularly during the spawning season from February to October. She emphasized the importance of public vigilance and timely reporting to protect these animals.
Conservation Efforts
So far this year, two turtle carcasses have been found along the Port Dickson beaches. Doreen advised the public to report any sightings of live or dead turtles to JPNS or the Port Dickson Ornamental Fish Centre at 06-662 1089. JPNS continues to conduct conservation programmes with various agencies to safeguard turtle populations in the region.
