Freshwater Sharks Suitable for Home Aquariums
Although there aren’t many freshwater shark species suitable as pets, there is still a nice variety to choose from. Here are some of the most popular options:
1. Bala Shark
Young Bala sharks are only about 3 inches long but can grow to around a foot, sometimes reaching 20 inches. They need a minimum 75-gallon tank at least 4 feet long. Bala sharks are omnivorous, easy to feed, and not overly aggressive, making them suitable for community tanks with larger, peaceful fish.
2. Columbian Shark
Columbian sharks are large catfish with high fins and long whiskers. They require at least a 75-gallon tank with plants and rocks that mimic their natural environment. These sharks prefer brackish water as juveniles and transition to saltwater as adults. They are predatory, can have venomous dorsal fins, and are best kept alone or in dedicated tanks.
3. Red Tail Shark
Red tail sharks have sleek black bodies and bright red tails. They are territorial and should be kept alone or with large, peaceful fish. Planted tanks with hiding spots are ideal. They eat a variety of meat- and plant-based foods, including flakes and brine shrimp.
4. Rainbow Shark
Rainbow sharks are catfish that prefer planted tanks with caves and dens. They are territorial and should not be housed with other sharks. Smooth or sandy substrates protect their delicate barbels. Rainbows explore the tank actively and are excellent jumpers, so a covered tank is essential.
5. Iridescent Shark
Starting at about 3 inches, iridescent sharks can grow over 50 inches and require at least a 300-gallon tank. They are highly active, need room to swim on multiple levels, and will eat fish small enough to fit in their mouths. These catfish can live up to 20 years if properly cared for.
6. Silver Apollo Shark
Silver Apollos are schooling fish that grow to about 6 inches. They are fast swimmers and best kept in groups of five or more. Sensitive to pH changes and ammonia, they require a strong filter and weekly 25% water changes. Though peaceful, they live near the surface and compete for food.
