Pink Ringed Tent Turtles
As the name suggests, pink ringed tent turtles are known for their distinctive pink rounded keel, which gives them their unique tent-like appearance. This feature, along with red or brown dots around their eyes, makes them easily recognizable.
Habitat
These turtles are commonly found in freshwater rivers and streams across southern Nepal and northern India, including the Ghagra, Chambal, Hindon, Ganges, Yamuna, and Koshi rivers. They are more accustomed to mainland habitats than seawater, often resting on fallen trees, logs, and rocks.
Diet
In the wild, pink ringed tent turtles feed on a variety of aquatic animals and plants. As pets, they can be offered leafy vegetables and insects such as worms, crickets, and shrimps. Dietary habits change with age: juveniles tend to be more carnivorous, while adults lean towards herbivory, favoring leafy greens like water lettuce, watercress, water hyacinth, kale, and lettuce.
Breeding
The breeding process is fascinating. Male turtles court females by fanning their frontal claws and swimming around them until mating occurs. The breeding season lasts six months, from October to March. Females lay their eggs in soft substrates, producing 2 clutches per season depending on size.
